WELSH DOBERMANN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 2008 – DOGS

This show has always been a favourite of mine, so it was an honour to take on the task of sorting out the boys here, helping to keep things running smoothly were my two competent stewards. It is almost 5 years since I did males in this country, and unlike when I did bitches recently, percentage wise I was pleasantly surprised to see that the boys seem to be in better shape. Yes, the usual suspects need attention, namely movement and variation in heads, but on the whole I found better pasterns and hocks. In this age of ‘anti-dog’, temperaments were to be highly commended. I must mention the fabulous Open class, it was heartening to judge such a strong quality filled class, in which all were good examples of our breed, and I’m sure placings will change on another day. As always I strive to find a Dobermann with elegance, substance, soundness and if I’m really lucky a bit of ‘star quality’ as well, I think I found plenty of the above in my final line up. Past wins are set aside, so with a clean sheet, here is my assessment of today’s performance.

Minor Puppy

  1. Barton & Jerrard-Dinn’s  KITADO SHADOW FAX OF JERADOBE 8mths old black boy who had lots of bone & substance, a beautiful head with the required depth & width of muzzle, good head planes and dark eye, lovely reach of neck flowing into shoulders, good front and forechest, depth of chest to elbows, and a nice turn of stifle into strong hocks. He moved very positively for such a youngster, and his overall balance impressed me. BPD & in agreement with my co-judge BPIS.
  2. Tinsley & Cox’s  ZELOVIAK INCANTATION WITH SHERREBENCA 7mths smart boy with a lovely shape, good reach of neck, correct forechest & depth of brisket, nice turn of stifle. This boy had more length of loin than 1 and not the headpiece.
  3. Johnson’s  DCOURTS OURANOS

Puppy

  1. Sharp’s  MARTIFERS STOP THE PRESS 10mths old who was well up for size, but had nice bone & substance to balance that. Strong head & front, lovely tight feet, good reach of neck and forechest, body deep to elbow. Would like stronger hocks, but overall a nice boy who was well handled.

Junior

  1. Condon’s  ENBORNE’S THE REAL McCOY  Lovely youngster who had a clean outline from head to tail, beautiful crested neck into good shoulders, correct forechest and depth of brisket, strong straight forelegs, excellent topline & tailset. He looked balanced both standing and along with his sound steady movement  won this good class. Well handled.
  2. Sinnott’s  TROJANTEAM THE BRADSTER  14mths black with plenty of bone & substance and a lovely overall shape with nothing overdone, good depth of body, good topline and tailset and finished with a nice turn of stifle and strong hocks. Just a little ‘throaty’ which spoils the cleaness from head to neck, and not the positive movement of 1.
  3. Ingram’s  JOJAVIK ENTREPRENEUR.

Yearling

  1. Sykes’  BOSSKAT HERCULES AT BOBBYJEM 17mths old boy who was powerfully built throughout, with not only bone & substance, but muscle as well. Good width and depth to body, nice forechest, topline & tailset and strong head. Won this class with his purposeful movement.
  2. Evans’  EBRILL BROWNIE POINTS FROM MERRYDOBE  smartly shaped brown of 21mths of age. Lovely front, good head, neck and forechest. Good turn of stifle and hocks completed this compact boy. Outmoved by 1 today.
  3. Cluett’s  AMAZON ROGUE DEVILLE

Novice

  1. Condon’s  ENBORNE’S THE REAL McCOY.
  2. Livingstone’s  LIVIKEE BLACK JACK  this boy was 4th in a good Junior class, he has a smart shape, lovely parallel forelegs, good topline & tailset, and the picture was finished by a lovely rear end and strong hocks.
  3. Caffel’s  DOBERWAY CHEROKEE

Undergraduate

  1. Patching’s  JOWENDY’S ROBOCOP AT MARICANCHI another black with lots of power and strength packed into this short coupled boy. Beautiful head, lovely length of neck into well laid shoulders, extra forechest and depth of body, good topline & tailset. Moved really well and in the main handled sympathetically, except he did tend to overstretch him at times. Beat a very nice Junior/Novice winner with his classic headpiece.
  2. Condon’s  ENBORNE’S THE REAL McCOY
  3. Ingram’s  JOJAVIK ENTREPRENEUR

Graduate

  1. Matthew’s  KREIGER MAJOR DOUMO AT HEATHWAEN  13mths brown lad with a lovely smart shape, lots to like here, good width to head, nice depth of body and forechest, strong parallel legs with tight feet, clean over the shoulders into a good topline & tailset, good turn of stifle and strong hocks. Lovely youngster who just needs time to gain some body and width to complete this package.

Post Graduate

  1. Wedgbury’s  DRIFTLANDS FRIDAY’S CHILD  very little separated 1 & 2 here, and as  I was taking my notes I learned from the handlers why, they are litter brothers! This black boy had bone & substance and was balanced both standing and moving, lovely clean head, good reach of neck into clean shoulders, good forechest & depth of chest to elbow. Strong parallel forelegs & tight feet. Excellent spring of rib (not seen very often these days!) and good rear end. Good muscle throughout. Moved and handled well. I did consider this youngster for further honours, but today had to give way to more mature boys. I’m sure his time will come.
  2. Evans’  DRIFTLANDS MR BOJANGLES as I said above, this is litter brother to 1, and it was difficult to separate them, everything I said about 1 certainly applies here! But today this lad was a complete ‘figet-bum’ and couldn’t be persuaded to completely settle to do his job, I have no doubt these two will change places regularly, both are good examples of our breed.
  3. Stewart & Smith’s  EBRILL GIMMEABREAK

Limit

  1. Gabb & Steven’s  JOJAVIK THE GIGOLO at nearly 2 ½ yrs old this was a very smart standard size boy who presented a clean picture throughout. Lovely head with correct muzzle, dark eye, good reach of neck, forechest & depth of brisket, good topline & tailset and turn of stifle. Plenty of bone & substance giving a picture of power from head to toe.
  2. Smith’s  OTAGO MATATA slightly taller than 1, but another with a clean smart outline, good head with dark eye, strong parallel forelegs, tight feet, and a strong topline & tailset which was held on the move. He was carrying the correct weight and was nicely muscled, just not quite the depth of brisket and forechest of 1.
  3. Evans’, Byrne & Butlers’  AMAZON TALK OF THE DEVIL.

Open

This was a fantastic class, all were good examples of our breed and worthy of a place, if ever there was a day when I needed more than 5 cards this was it!

  1. Reid’s  SWNYDWR SUPACOOL This was my star of the day, I had found what I was looking for, elegance, bone & substance and a dollop of ‘star quality’. A beautiful black boy whose clean crisp and sharp outline was eye catching. When going over him I found a classic wedge headpiece with dark eye, correct muzzle, lovely crested neck into well laid shoulders, well developed forechest and depth of chest to elbow. Cracking topline & tailset, lovely sweep of stifle and strong hocks, Good angulation fore & aft giving a picture of real balance throughout. He was the correct weight with good muscle tone which he put to good use on the move, nothing thrown out or pinned in here, just sound solid movement which he made look effortless. No question about it, even in this strong company my CC winner and with the nod from the referee BIS.
  2. Price’s  SUPETA’S WATERLOO SUNSET  another very smart black boy who I liked as a youngster and he has now developed into a lovely boy. Similar to 1 in outline and having the required substance and elegance, nice head with a dark eye, good reach of neck, well developed forechest & depth of brisket. Good turn of stifle and strong hocks. Another having the correct weight and muscle, and powerful on the move. Just not quite the topline or clean throat of 1, but still a quality male, my RCC.
  3. Evans & Byrne’s  CH AMAZON COLDPLAY

Veteran

  1. Irving’s  AMAZON LIVE N LET DIE AT BOUDICCAS 8 yrs young black boy who I loved as a youngster and my opinion of him is just the same, with lots to like here especially his attitude, he really enjoyed himself! He gave his handler 100% in this class and showed his socks off. He has good bone & substance and a lovely balanced shape throughout, still looking good for his age.
  2. Edyveane’s  KATEAMEAD HARVEY WALLBANGER just over 8 ½ yrs young another lovely black who wasn’t far behind 1. Beautiful balanced shape, good bone & substance, handsome head, plenty of depth to body, tight feet, and a good turn of stifle, another who moved really well.
  3. Cox’s  JADENBURG APOLLO FROM ZELOVIAK
